I would like to say hello to all with this year almost coming to a close can't believe it only 2 more months. I am seriously hoping that I got my karma straight last month while I was in mainland Japan. I visited the big Buddha in Kamakura and put my hands together for a good upcoming year. With everything to be thankful for Grand-kids, Work and Good Friends. Late season fishing at YYY CLUB iE RESORT produced a little surprise last weekend off the waters of Ie Island. This 75kg / 2m 50cm little bundle of trouble was fought for 40 minutes before almost landing itself. As you can see in the fight video the waters were calm a bit to calm for this time of year but, overall a great day to be out on the water. Book your fishing trips now before the north winds pick up and blow out all the good spots.

Thanks to all for this busy year so far. Been back to Ie Island a little more than I wanted too. Everyone says busy is a good thing and I agree. Thanks to Torii Chapel, CREDO, 505th QM Battalion and everyone who has been up to YYY Club Ie Resort. This year we are planning a total renovation of the cottages and all the main building rooms will get a face lift as well. This August we will be on the block for 19 years thanks to all the support from our military community. This January 10th - 20th we will totally close for the renovations and reopen the main building on the 21st. But, the cottages will remain closed until February 21st all dates are tentative and subject to change as construction never runs on schedule. HAHAHA we are looking forward to this project as it has been in the works for a couple years now. When we reopen we look forward to serving you in the new and improved YYY Club Ie Resort with all your retreat, seminar and getaway needs. We have been in a tight relationship with the Army and Marine Corps over the past couple years. Where is the Air Force? Everyone reads about them or watches there devastating after effects on the news. We live in the midst of some of the most powerful of all natural disasters. Typhoons as they are called on this side of the world. Depending on your location possibly Hurricane or Cyclone are the name of your monster. I know most everyone has saw the movie "Perfect Storm" yes, that was a big one based on a true story. Here in Okinawa we live in the alley. Remember back in the states when the garbage truck comes in one side and out the other, its similar here usually forming in the South down around the Philippine's and moving North until it dissipates. I am no professional by any means but, have lived here long enough to see some big ones. I believe they are necessary to clean out the old and bring in the new. For example, the seas around Okinawa during the hot summer months usually gather with sediment, algae, and other unnatural happenings. A Typhoon will keep the ocean temps. cool for coral to flourish. Some months heading into the ocean feels like sitting in a hot bath tub. Not good for anything to grow. Just like your vehicles engine needs a good flushing after 3000 to 5000 Km or so. I welcome the Typhoon and again say I am no expert on the subject. Search Kadena Weather for detailed information.

The summer extreme heat is gone just in time to enjoy a round instead of slopping through 18 holes. Everyone has been there and I know everyone will agree its not pleasant. With the New opening of Taiyo Golf Course coming in February lets get the practice rounds in now. I hear it is going to be pretty hard with long narrow fairways and tiered greens with lots of hazards. Sounds like a good time. Speaking practice rounds will everyone go up to Bell Beach or Arashi Yama and spend over a hundred bucks? This is a good question and the Banyan tree will get busy for awhile. This is where we come to the plate. How does an overnight stay with a round of golf and breakfast sound and YES all for under a hundred dollars. What are the stipulations you ask? Weekdays, Sunday threw Thursday for 7,800 yen. Weekends are for 9,800 yen all plans are based on double occupancy. The ferry ticket price for adults are 1,330 yen. There is no better deal in Okinawa. Please let me know if you find one. Also up coming Whale watching season is right around the corner and I know everyone will be heading for the Keramas. LOL Where do the whales migrate from Mainland Japan. I get to see them before everyone in the south of Okinawa. They pass right threw the channel between Ie Island and Main Island of Okinawa. Hi everyone, Sorry it has been awhile since my last post. Running around keeping busy have a lot of stuff on my plate lately. Finally the summer vacation season is winding down and all the kids are back in school... YEA!!! Just started the second half of our fiscal year and everything is so far so good... I will list up a series of upcoming events that we will be attending and looking forward to seeing everyone come out and support our military community.

Oct. 10 & 11 is the ROCTOBER FEST at Torii Beach this is a two day event with all the trimmings. Numerous rock bands from all over Asia. This is going to be a big party. When you get to this event find the YYY CLUB iE RESORT booth and sign up for a free overnight getaway package. 16:00 ~ 23:00 See you there.

Oct. 10 ~ 12 is the club championship Banyan Tree Golf Club is holding there club championship this is a three day event with a awards banquet on the 12th. Good luck to all the golfers who play. Also, ask about YYY CLUB iE RESORT Special Golf Plan. You won`t be disappointed for under a Franklin you get an overnight stay w/ breakfast and one round play at Ie Country Club. Nov. 7th is the annual Chili`s Festival this was a great event last year w/ Ashanti, providing a super stage show. I cant wait to hear this years entertainment. Looking forward to seeing everyone come out. Great food and friends what more can you ask for.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner so, start making plans now. MCCS Tours+ has a tour coming up to the Island for Thanksgiving and let me cook the turkey for you. Thanks to all who supported the Marina Mania Beach Bash `09. And a special Thanks to the Deno & Smith Families who were the winners of a family overnight getaway at YYY CLUB iE RESORT. The staff at the marina were outstanding and very helpful as we brought our newest addition to the resort family into the marina for display and a special sunset cruise. It was at first a logistical nightmare to try to get the 1.4 with a lot of zero`s down from Ie Island into a un-familiar marina but, with the full support of everyone involved it went flawlessly. Official Summer vacation started last Monday July 20th. for most schools in Okinawa. Mainland Japan started Friday July 17th so we are a week in the month and a half summer bash.... BBQ, Beach and Relaxation with a capitol ATION... Fireworks, since the forth of July are a regular sight here in Okinawa through the summer vacation with enormous beach festivals and events... We have joined the band-wagon, August 2nd starting at 11:00am. We kick off the event with games, local food venders and in the evening an assortment of local entertainment... Ferry schedule: First boat leaving Motobu port departs at 09:00 and the last boat leaving Ie Island departs at 16:30 that is a full day of sun and fun... First, let me explain the title of this post NEW EDITIONS yes this is plural meaning more than one... My oldest daughter had twins May 20th. Yes, I`m a Grandpa!!!!!! It`s been a little crazy around the house with 3 on and 3 off schedule milk and diapers... Got to love it!!!!

This past weekend the weather was not cooperating but, had a little window on Saturday... Hit the ocean for the first time this season. The place name is I think Zampa flats or Maeda flats not to sure on the name... Low tide was at 10:15 + 5min. We got there at 08:00 and the tide was already out... Someone teach me how to read this jacked up tide schedule... We did some snorkeling, OH! forgot to introduce me old bro from way back in the Corps... Who I`ve known for over 20 and one of the old Charlie Dog Crew, only people from back in the 80`s on Okinawa would get this... Anyway back to the good story I was about 10min. U.A. Sorry old dog... We changed over and jumped in and almost froze my A _ _ off, still a little cold even for a wet suit...

Flowers, Mike or Eric depends on how you know him... Looked like he was diving the Artic circle with a hood... As I found out later, have got to get me one COLD real COLD... First time at this spot for us so we did a little recon... Not 30yrds. from the shore were coral mounds so we poked around for awhile BAM!!! saw this big old (Appa)Ooni Daruma Okoze, Stone fish. How ever you call them good chow... Ugly as heck but good for dinner just be carefull of the dorsal fin... Very poisonous... Posted above are some pics... Making the waters safer on Okinawa...

I thought that sunflowers bloomed in the summer... To my suprise I guess they bloom in February!! WOW, learn something new everyday. I saw this commercial on TV that in Kitanakagusuku village there was a Sunflower garden or field so I went to investigate... Sure enough there it was, a farmer had planted a field of sunflowers. Another outstanding weekend in Okinawa... And, Spring is in the air... WHAT!! So soon you say. Yes, I have it all down on film well not actually film but, a flash memory stick... We intended to go Mt. Yaedake to see the cherry blossoms and saw a traffic warning on the way up. Congested traffic for 5 km. probably all the way through Nago. (Nago is the largest city in the northern area of Okinawa) Thanks for digital traffic signs. Change of plans so we went up as far as Ginoza. (Ginoza is a farming town along the East coast of Okinawa) Someone was looking over us... On the way back South we found are own Cherry Blossoms not as many but, just as nice. During my short or long 9 day vacation over the holidays. I think is was too short, We took a little road trip up north while the weather was cooperating. We left early afternoon and didn`t arrive at home until almost midnight. While traveling up route 58 stopping at all the tourist spots looking for something out of the normal, we finally reached Hedo point which is the most Northern tip of the main island Okinawa. We saw a huge Yanbaru Kuina which is a protected bird and a Okinawa treasure. Lucky for us to finally get out of the hustle of the city a see so much nature a finally get to breath some clean fresh air... It was memorable and I can`t wait to get up there again. Over the past 23 years. I have seen many changes some good and others not for the better. In my opinion mind you. Everything from Cars, New Fashions and Awamori. More to my style Awamori has changed from an art form to mass distribution trying to make the extra buck. Don`t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with making an extra buck here and their, but for the real Awamori lover don`t forget the art. Ie Island has a new 100th Anniversary Bottle that recently just came out, posted above are some pics. Really looking forward to tasting this one. Still a little young at 3 yrs, but should age great in the bottle. The question is how long can I wait? Cars and Fashions will have to wait till next time. YYY CLUB iE RESORT Drifting Treasures

YYY CLUB iE RESORT is located on a island in the East China Sea a couple NM (nautical miles) off the coast of Motobu Peninsula. The sea is full of drifting things from all over the world, might be garbage to some and a treasure to others. I have found things washed up on the beach that I brought home and got in trouble for too. I know the romantisism of enjoying a walk and finding a bottle washed up with a letter in it from who knows were. And every time you see a bottle you look close to see if that letter is in the bottle, usually not. The fun part is wishing to find the JINNI in the bottle. Usually around Ie Island one finds driftwood, seaglass, and a occasional glass buoy or what is left of it. Now days the commercial fishermen around the world are using plastic buoy balls for the nets or long lines. I`ve found some glass buoy`s brown in color and some of the larger ones were green. This one in particular was clear and not of the normal shape, a guest staying in the resort told me it was a Russian Roller. Russia, Korea, China and etc. Ie Island is coral bound with its protective reefs, a glass buoy is rare and I`ve found several. Driftwooding is also a weekend past-time, the North side of the island is full of interesting shapes and sizes. Someday hoping to find a ships name inscribed or the gang plank of a long lost pirate ship. Just pulling your leg, but it would be something don`t you think? Posted above are some pictures of garbage or someones imagination in full throttle. The (Bar Lagoon) sign was a piece of driftwood I found and retrieved, with the help of a friend and months of work is now hanging on the wall for everyone to enjoy. The marine house has a large collection of sea-shells and glass buoy`s on display, so enjoy!!

We the staff at YYY CLUB iE RESORT are proud to support the military community here in Okinawa. Being a long way from home can be hard even for the old salts that have moved their families numerous times over the years. Children have been in and out of schools from Europe to Asia. This reminds me of a friend way back, I was in 5th grade at Captain Grey Elementary School. His name was Chris and he was born in Okinawa imagine that, I had no idea where Okinawa was let alone Japan. Now after arriving in Okinawa in 1985 I consider it home. Small world after all. Back to the original post, got lost for a minute in memories, sorry. We have been supporting the community for 15yrs. now from events like Discover Okinawa Expo and the MCCS Family Readiness Expo just to name a few. Upcoming event schedule are Chili`s Fest on Nov. 1, looking forward to seeing everyone come out and participate. There will be lot`s of fun and games and on mainstage is ASHANTI should be a great event. A very special thanks to 18th SVS. for the opportunity to get out and be a part of this 50,000 or so strong community. These upcoming months are full of activities, festivals and fairs. Locally on Okinawa, Ie Island is well known for our Lily Festival. This is a major event on Ie Island during the later weeks of April and first part of May. I would like to introduce some other events or happenings that are not so well known but, should have the same recogntion and are equally interesting and fun. In my last post I mentioned MCCS Thanksgiving weekend tour, YYY CLUB iE RESORTS annual Christmas Party, and I also would like to mention some local festivities. Hibiscus festival with hundreds of different types and colors it is really a sight. Starting Dec.13th with the opening ceromony, and the following weekend with demonstrations on planting and care of the Hibiscus, and lastly ending Dec. 26th with the All Japan Junior and Elementary School Hibiscus Cup Invitational Golf Tournament. Ie Island Industrial and Agricultural Fair Nov. 8th and 9th is also a interesting visit. I lived on Ie Island for 15yrs. and I had no clue at some of the products that were made locally. e.g. Honey was the most surpising. I asked around and sure enought there is a bee farm on island. On the Industy side, I guess having a bee sting at just the right point is some type of theraphy. Sounds painfull to me but, its a business on Ie Island. Just around the corner are the seasons when all the family gets together for a celebration and long overdue conversation. These annual events usually bring happiness, laughter and a tear or two. Ryukyu (Okinawa) History Lesson from Brian

This past weekend we went on an adventure in time around the 14th to 15th century to be exact. The time of Kings, Castles and Treachery. Zakimi Castle is located on the West coast of Okinawa and commands a view of central Okinawa and East China Sea outlying islands. This medium sized castle was home to Lord Gosamaru who later became Lord of Nakagusuku Castle located on the East coast and in direct view of Katsuren Castle where an ambitious man named Amawari had gained power. For Gosamaru`s role in the conquest of the Norhtern Kingdom with King Sho Hashi (1372-1439) Lord Gosamaru was given rule over the central part of Okinawa mainland by then King Sho Taikyu (1454-1460) thus setting the stage for the most controversial event in Ryukyu (Okinawa) History. The Gosamaru/Amawari Revolt. Zakimi Castle is believed to have been built in the 15th century from the stones of Yamada Gusuku Castle some 41miles to the Northeast. I hope these pictures give you some type of image of life back in the 14th and 15th centuries during the First Sho Dynasty. The First Sho Dynasty ended as a result of a coup d`etat after the death of the seventh King Sho Toku (1441-1469) thus starting the Second Sho Dynasty from the emerged farmer from Izena Island next island North from Ie Island. His name was Kanamaru with keeping tradition and strong ties to the Chinese Emperor took the name King Sho En (1470-1476) the Second Sho Dynasty which continued unbroken for 19 generations of Kings, for 410 years. Until the "Disposition of the Ryukyus" in the early Meiji era Japan (1868-1912).

This is my personal opinion; IE Island has some of the best diving spots in Okinawa. The North side of the Island has a vast array of undisturbed spots for all levels of diving. The only two spots that are accessible from land are, Waji look-out spot were from the entry point heading to the Northwest is one of the world`s largest brain coral formations. Lily field park is the other there is a restroom in the shape of a whale tail from this entry spot mostly uncharted area for the real adventurer. This is the real season to dive IE Island, because all the summer vacation tourists are gone and the weather is mild until mid November before the North winds pick up. Some of the most undisturbed history on land and sea is located on IE Island in all of Okinawa. At the diving spot called the CANYONS only accessible by boat is located inside the U.S.M.C. United States Marine Corps training area and is undoubtedly the most undisturbed. YYY CLUB iE RESORT provides dive tours to all the spots on IE Island. This past weekend, I went roaming around looking for something interesting to do found a lot of colorful trees and flowers in bloom. While in Chatan Central Park (Kuwae Koenn) I found some trees and shrubs that I have never seen on Ie Island. Living on mainland Okinawa for the first time in fifteen or so years everything is a new experience and adventure. Got my little camera out and went snapping away. Later that afternoon took a little drive around close by and found some more things that I have never heard of before. (Kurashiki Dam) more like a small lake and NO Bass fishing!! (Chibana Castle Site) not much to see and in bad need of a old school field day! (Nakagusuku Castle Site) A World Heritage Site, I have been here before when the kids were small but overlooked the area around it. Watch for upcoming posts and photos. This is going to be a short story of progress and transition. I`ve seen the resort change slowly just like father time. Change is good for the most part and things will evolve and flurish. Here are some pictures that make you want to stop time. Imagine back when your first child called you mama or dada, FREEZE let me go get the camera! Doesn`t work that way does it they keep getting bigger and bigger until that day comes when they are as big as you or bigger. We have a little pond at the resort and its original purpose was a holding tank to water the grass and for the fire hose. A few years back myself and two other fellows built the bridge across the pond and then I started adding gold fish and turtles. I was offered to ducks to add to the pond for the most part everyone was not to happy. After getting used to them everyone started to like them and they became an attraction to all the guests. After leaving the Island in April got a call sometime in May they had laid about a dozen eggs. The rest is history.

Brian`s Weekend at YYY

Just this past weekend I went back to IE Island for a couple of meetings. Hoping the current TYPHOON would get closer so I could stay a little longer. No luck the ferry was running it`s normal schedule. (&%$%&#$%)!!!! A bunch of words that I can`t publish were said SORRY. While waiting for the 13:00 ferry. Desided to take a walk around the grounds at this time the rain had cleared and the sun was trying to stick it`s head out as to no avail. Thinking to myself that a lot has changed since April, ran back in to get my little camera. Some interesting things caught my eye and started snapping away. Have a little quiz for anyone interested? What is the name of this fruit in the picture? Yes, that was your hint (FRUIT).

Season of Sunsets

This is a photo taken just about a year ago on the North side of Ie Island. I was lure fishing down by the lilly field park, this is a secret spot so don`t tell anyone (hahaha). Well not catching anything and getting late started packing up my gear thinking, I got a good walk ahead of me. Being a good responsible fisherman and never leaving home with out it. Took out my little camera just in case needing some proof of the big one. Snapped a couple of pictures of the sunset noticing the ocean was flat as a pancake. Finally getting home and questions from both fronts; Did you catch anything? No, I said and the kids smiles turned upside down. They will learn to appreciate a sunset picture when they have kids!!! One nice sunset takes away a week of stress. From late August until mid December, here on Okinawa are the must brilliant colorfull sunsets in all the world. Thats my opinion, and I am sure that everyone here would agree.

Last week of summer vacation "YEAH"

This is the last week of summer vacation and all of us parents are excited. The house will return to calm and thus starts the day dreaming of tropical beaches. WAIT!! Why dream about it! A 30 minute ferry ride will get you away for a weekend were stess is not allowed and the beach is always waiting for you.
